WRITING SAMPLES

The following pages include a variety of writing samples from my academic experience at UCSB. Each genre demonstrates transferable skills I have acquired that will be useful in my transition to law school. This first writing sample, an appellate brief, represents the first stepping stone in my mastery of legal writing. The second writing sample, a brochure for sexual assault awareness, shows my ability to discuss a socially relevant issue in an accessible way. The third writing sample, an excerpt from an international business communication manual, highlights my intercultural competency and my ability to identify distinctive forms of communication. Completing each writing sample helped me contribute to my growing writing skill set.

Course: Legal Writing

The attached writing sample is from Writing 107L: Legal Writing. Our final assignment for this course was to construct an appellate brief advocating for a fictitious client, Tommy Tango. In this scenario, I am writing as an attorney who is trying to persuade the opposing counsel that my client, Mr. Tango, is not guilty of conspiracies to commit arson and insurance fraud. This piece of writing is tailored to attorneys or those that are familiar with legal jargon. Legal Writing allowed me to master a a new genre of writing that I could add to my repertoire of writing styles.

Course: Civic Engagement and Public Writing

The attached writing sample is from Writing 153A: Civic Engagement and Public Writing, the first capstone course of the Professional Writing Minor. One of our final assignments for this course was a multimedia assignment in which we expressed our knowledge and ability to write about a topic we are passionate about. I chose the issue of sexual assault and created a double-sided brochure aimed at educating incoming college students about the issue. Working on a multimedia piece helped me to improve my design skills and create a document that was both visually appealing and informationally cohesive.

Course: Professional Writing for Global Careers

The attached writing sample is from Writing 107G: Professional Writing for Global Careers. The final project for this course required students to work in groups of 4 - 5 to complete a manual for international business communication. Each student in the group chose a country and researched the business communication techniques from that country. For my portion of the project, I researched the communication styles of Italy. I have attached an excerpt from my portion of the manual, which I wrote as if the audience knew nothing of Italian culture. I chose to study businesses communication in Italy because I have spent extensive time living in Italy in addition to having studied abroad there during my time at UCSB.
